| The recent movie, The World Unseen with Lisa Ray in the lead role has shaken quite a few people, particularly those who are slightly skeptical about the idea of homosexuality. There is no denying that there are such people in the world who see homosexuality as absurd, weird and perhaps even, outright unnatural. Several people have said that it is against the laws of nature for a man to fall in love with a man or for a woman to have feeling for another woman.
However, there is no indication in nature itself, that it is unnatural for persons from the same sex to fall in love with each other. Today, not one, but a number of lesbian film directors are taking up the baton and striving to create awareness regarding homosexuality. It is surprising to notice that not just women, but also numerous talented male directors are taking up the responsibility of making movies, which provide a voice to those who are scared to voice their own opinions.
A lesbian film need not be about just the physical relationship between two women; in reality, movies made on the topic of lesbian and gay love are actually incredibly sensitive and poignant. They delve deep into the psyche of such individuals, who fall in love with someone who is of the same sex. As would be the case with a man and a woman being in love, similarly, with two persons of the same gender. For them too, it is not just physical, but also emotional and perhaps even spiritual.
As seen in movies like The World Unseen or Brokeback Mountain, the story line lays emphasis on the relationship that starts with the heart; the physical aspect is actually secondary. Moviemakers these days are making an attempt to pick such issues and bring them to light without actually belittling them. Their idea is to make the world realize that homosexuality might be a little different from their idea of normal; but that does not necessarily make it abnormal.
Several lesbian and gay film directors are striving to create a genre of cinema, which is not only bold but also incredibly honest. Lesbian or gay love is just as honest as any other relationship in this world, and goes through the same ups and downs. Rather, the confusions, doubts and fears in such relationships tends to be more, because it is way more difficult for a woman to accept her love for another woman, rather than spilling out those feelings for a man. |
