Moscow is one of the oldest and most mesmerizing metropolises in the world. It boasts a long and interesting history. The city has been totally destroyed and rebuilt again several times throughout the years. Each time the city was resurrected from the ashes, it got more and more gorgeous. The most talented and renowned architects were invited from all over the world to restore Moscow. Thus, Moscow sights are truly well worth seeing. These days Moscow is the city where the old and the new, the great and the small live side by side in reciprocal tolerance and respect. Near ancient convents and cathedrals, there tower over ultramodern business centers and skyscrapers. But, first and foremost, Moscow is the hub of Russia's history. Red Square is the most renowned city square in Moscow and, probably, one of the most famous in the world. The square separates the Kremlin, the former royal fort and currently the official residence of Russia's President, from a historic trading quarter known as Kitai-gorod. Since the principal Moscow streets radiate from here in every direction, Red Square is usually regarded as the central square of Moscow and of the Russian Federation. Resurrection Gate is known as the only existing gate of the Kitai-gorod in Moscow. It joins the north-western end of Red Square with Manege Square and gives its name to Voskresenskaya Square (called Resurrection Square) situated nearby. Alexander Garden is one of the first public parks in Moscow. There are 3 separate gardens located along the western Kremlin wall. The State Historical Museum of Russia is situated between Red Square and Manege Square. There are exhibitions of remnants of the prehistoric people that inhabited present-day Russia as well as extremely valuable masterpieces of art obtained by the members of the Romanov family. The total number of objects in the collection exhibited in the museum amounts to millions. The Cathedral of Basil the Blessed is a Russian Orthodox cathedral towering above in Red Square. It was built to commemorate the seizure of Kazan and Astrakhan, and today symbolises the geometric center of the city and the hub of its growth.
