A combination of punk and hardcore tendencies are the basis of the emo subculture. The term "emocore" comes from emotional hardcore and is thought to have appeared the mid of the Eighties. The first emos of the subculture added melodic elements to their tunes. Sadness, love, sense of loneliness are usual topics of their songs. Hence, the emo style could be defined as rock music with emotional lyric elements. Still, the definition of the emo style is still debatable. Although the emo subculture was originally considered a music genre, today it is referred not only to music, but also to conduct, fashion, style and the way of life. The emo style is known as unfashionable. This way emo representatives show that they take no interest in social processes. Emo adherents consider themselves outcasts and, thus, show their disregard for existing social rules and regulations through the emo subculture. They prefer skinny jeans, sometimes in bright colours, and tight T-shirts, with names of emo bands printed on them. Studded belts and black wristbands are usual accessories in the emo fashion. Piercing is also popular among emos. Black Converse sneakers are typically worn by emos. Some males also prefer thick black horn-rimmed glasses. The emo fashion is also famous for its hairstyles. Popular looks include long side-swept bangs, often covering one or both eyes. Straightened and coloured black hair is also a part of the emo fashion. Hair is normally highlighted blue, pink, red, or blond. Short choppy layers of hair are also usual. At times this fashion has been characterised as a fad. At the outset of the 2000s, the emo style was associated with an impeccable look, but when young people stuck to the style, it became darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the colour black. Emos are extremely vulnerable characters. Psychologists regard them as introverts who do not want to socialise with the world around. Instead, they show their thoughts by means of poetry. Poems they compose are full of sorrow, nostalgia and despair. Commonly these emotions are typical of teenagers aged 12 - 18, when they are emotionally unstable. For many emo adherents emoism becomes a way of life.
