Everybody, including children, can experience hair loss, known as alopecia. Baldness refers to undue loss of hair from your scalp. It can be brought on by hereditory factors, disease or even drug therapy. The commonest type of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia. It is responsible for around 95% of the cases of hair loss in the United States of America. Males suffer from androgenetic alopecia far more often than women. Two factors must be present for it: a genetic predisposition to undue hair loss and the male hormone testosterone (yes, women have a low level of testosterone in their bodies). Commonly, an enzyme in hair follicles converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT stimulates the growth of hair, but also shrinks hair follicles on the scalp, causing thinner, fuzzier growth. A genetic predisposition, alongside higher levels of testosterone and DHT, increases the probability that scalp hair growth may be adversely affected. Baldness is observed when the rate of shed hair is bigger than the number of re-growth or when the re-growth is finer and/or shorter than the hair that is lost. Androgenetic alopecia is a cosmetic problem. One of the most powerful methods to treat it sanctioned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is Finasteride (Propecia). Taken daily in a tablet form, Propecia inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT, thus helping to prevent the shrinking of hair follicles. Propecia is for men only and must not be taken by females, as it can lead to birth defects. Generic Propecia, which is as potent as the brand name version, is low-priced and, therefore, more affordable for males suffering from alopecia. As a result of a 24 months' study 83% of men aged 18 - 41 with mild to moderate have maintained their hair. Most men reported improvement in appearance. As well as other prescription drugs, Generic Propecia may bring on side effects. In clinical studies, adverse side effects from Generic Propecia were uncommon and did not impact most men. A small percentage of males experienced certain sexual side effects. These adverse side effects were temporary and went away in males who stopped taking Generic Propecia. These side effects also went away in most men (58%) who kept on taking Generic Propecia.
